| Grand Designs takes a look at the 45 Degree House |
| Monday, 2 November 2015 |
|
This week the team from Grand Designs NZ took a look at the '45 Degree House' designed by Ballara Bulman Chin (BBC) Architects. The house takes advantage of the extreme topography Wellington is famous for, and could be seen as a precedent for building on the many unused plots of land close to the city centre. The solution was to hang the 4-storey house off a vertical 12metre block wall anchored to the land. "We effectively tipped the house on its side, with exposed vertical foundations towards the cliff, and wrapped the downhill wall with a roof, and this gave opportunity for the architecture to follow; the hallway became a lift, the skylights became view-windows, and the open-plan living through the two middle levels is vertically - not horizontally - connected." View the Grand Designs article by clicking the link below. [More ...] |

| Zac Athfield and Frank Gehry film |
| Wednesday, 12 August 2015 |
|
This month, architect Zac Athfield
introduces a screening of Gehry’s Vertigo, the
fourth project of the Living Architectures series.
The film offers a rare and vertiginous trip across the
rooftops of the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao, shaking up the
idealised image of one of the most symbolic icons of
contemporary architecture. Surprisingly realistic and highly
emotional, Gehry’s Vertigo puts us in the shoes of
the climbers in charge of glass cleaning, who tirelessly, 30
meters above ground, fight against a few specks of dust. The film will be showing on Monday 24 August, at 6pm at the City Gallery in Wellington. Find out more using the link below: [More ...] |

| Want to import Rhino models into ARCHICAD as GDL objects? |
| Friday, 24 July 2015 |
| The Rhino-ARCHICAD link converts a Rhino model into ARCHICAD geometry. The container of the Rhino-based model is GDL, which is ARCHICAD’s generic object format. For larger and complex models, GRAPHISOFT has introduced the option to convert a Rhino model into a set of (smaller) GDL objects. This process enables the user to retain separate logical parts within the same model while providing a functionality to monitor and easily update the imported Rhino models in ARCHICAD. The LCF option is also advised to enable ARCHICAD's performance optimization algorithm to work seamlessly on an imported large Rhino model.[More ...] |

|
A "can-do attitude" has seen a Gladstone man recognised for his services to architecture. Originally from Glasgow, architect David Kernohan says he owes his success, which saw him made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit today, to adopting a Kiwi approach to life. "It's just an attitude that we have ... New Zealand has given us a can-do attitude and I think that we've adopted that - it's something that we don't have in the UK. If they see something that needs to be done, they get up and do it."[More ...] |

| Worth a Read |
| Tuesday, 7 April 2015 |
|
In Garth Falconer's book 'Living in Paradox', he explores the notions of urban living in New Zealand, how it has developed over time, and how the climate and topography of the country influenced the urban development. This level of detail and analysis of New Zealand cities hasn't been seen previously, says Diane Brand, dean of the National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries at the University of Auckland. While books on New Zealand architecture and cities are plentiful, "design of the city has not been tackled in a critical or design-centred way" until now. It is, she says, a "serious book".[More ...] |
